Smart Meters: Rochester’s Next Step Toward Smarter Energy Management
Rochester is entering a new era of energy innovation with the rollout of smart meters, an essential part of Rochester Gas and Electric’s (RG&E) grid modernization efforts. These advanced meters are replacing traditional analog gas and electric meters with cutting-edge digital technology that’s transforming how energy is tracked, delivered, and understood.
Unlike their predecessors, smart meters automatically transmit usage data to RG&E every hour. That means no more estimated bills, faster outage detection, and real-time insights into energy usage. They’re designed to streamline utility operations and empower customers with more accurate and transparent information.
RG&E began the smart meter rollout in 2023 and is on track to install over 571,000 meters by the end of 2025. The program launched in the Rochester area and is now expanding across the region. Customers will receive a postcard notifying them in advance, and in most cases—unless the meter is located indoors—installation won’t require anyone to be home.
With any new technology, customers have questions. RG&E has emphasized that all smart meter data is securely encrypted, used strictly for operational purposes, and will never be sold. Both residential and commercial users will have access to their data, giving them a clearer view of their energy patterns and opportunities to reduce waste or save on costs.
Ultimately, smart meters are about more than just convenience. They’re helping to create a smarter, more efficient grid—one that benefits both utilities and customers. Whether you’re tech-savvy or simply looking for more accurate billing, this upgrade is designed to give you more control over your energy use now and into the future.
